Creating Links to Library Resources

Creating links for library resources is not as simple as copying and pasting the address in the browser into your work. By following the linking guidelines below you will ensure that the library resources you wish to use will always be available.

EZproxy

EZproxy is a program used by the library to ensure that all library resources are available offsite. Due to the method by which our databases grant us access, AUS authenticates/grants access to users, not the individual databases. For this reason it's important to have EZproxy-ready links which force the user to authenticate with AUS before being forwarded on to the database.

How to make EZproxy-ready links

An EZproxy-ready link begin with the prefix below, and and is followed by a stable URL to the article of your choice.

Database specific examples

Ebrary

At this time there is no way to link directly to a page or chapter in an ebrary book. Links should be made to the item record in the library catalog using the "Bookmark As" link provided in the lower left corner of the record. From the catalog record users can click through to the ebook. This method is advised for all ebooks, including those from Safari, MyiLibrary, Springer, etc.

1. Highlight and copy Bookmark As link in AUS Library catalog record

For example, the link to Above time : Emerson's and Thoreau's temporal revolutions by James R. Guthrie would look like:

JSTOR

To link to an article entitled The Duality of Technology: Rethinking the Concept of Technology in Organizations by Wanda J. Orlikowski:

1. Start with the the EZproxy prefix
2. Add the JSTOR stable URL to the end (JSTOR stable URLs can be found in the "Item Information")

The resulting link looks like:

http://ezproxy.aus.edu/login?url=http://www.jstor.org/stable/2635280

Proquest Databases

Every article in Proquest databases comes with an EZproxy-ready link called DocumentURL in the Document Details section at the bottom of the article.

1. Use DocumentURL link

For example, the link for the article The New Digital Awareness by Shannon Bohle is:

EBSCOhost Databases

Similar to Proquest, all articles in EBSCOhost databases come with an EZproxy-ready link called Persistent link to this record (Permalink) available in the article's citation.

1. Use Persistent link to this record (Permalink)

Note: EBSCOhost links do not have the EZproxy prefix as previously discussed. This is not a problem for the moment.

For example, the link for the article Using Technology to Create Ageless Paintings by Linda Price is:

ScienceDirect

Using the DOI linking in ScienceDirect has given inconsistent results. This is why the easiest way to create a link to an article in Science Direct is to use the E-mail Article feature on the right side of the page. Doing this sends the citation and a link in an email message. When you've received the email, you need only add the EZproxy prefix to the link provided.

1. Start with the EZproxy prefix
2. Add the link provided using Email Article feature (this may mean right clicking on the title and copying the hyperlink within the email message)

For example, adding the ezproxy prefix in front of the the link provided when emailed for The Use of Quantum Dots in Organic Chemistry by Raquel E. Galian and Miguel de la Guardia is:

Emerald Fulltext

Emerald provides a link to articles from the abstract, but like EBSCOHOST, the links to not have the EZproxy prefix which can be ignored for the time being. Right clicking and copying the link the Article URL field provides an EZproxy ready link. If you chose to highlight and copy the link provided you will need to add the EZproxy prefix followed by http:// in front of the copied text.

1. Hover over Article URL and right click, selecting Copy Link Location, Copy Shortcut, or Copy Link Address depending on your browser

For example, the link to Time to Share a Sales Experience by Ian Wilson is as follows:
