Each semester the library recognizes graduating student assistants who have worked with us for 4 or more semesters in providing support to you our users. Our student assistants are very important to us. With their assistance, Help Desk and Information Commons support from opening to closing – seven days a week is possible.

As is our tradition, graduating students each select a book that now contains their name inscribed on a book-plate. Though only a small token, book-plates are a lasting reminder of the contribution each student has made to the AUS Library.

This semester we have 7 long serving graduating student assistants who have worked tirelessly for us. We asked each to reflect upon their experience and to consider the single most important thing they have learned working in the Library. Here is what they said.

Obida Othman (College of Engineering – Civil Engineering)

  • Number of semesters working in the library: 6
  • Book Selection: موت صغير by محمد حسن علوان

“I learned how to respect people and help them with passion which greatly enhanced my customer service skills. I learned to separate my personal issues from professional issues. I learned to control myself more and how to change the professional environment into a friendly environment. I made a lot of friends not only with my colleagues but even with my supervisors. Finally, I learned how to cope with pressure especially at the end of the semester when I have to manage work, studies, and extracurricular activities.”

Mueez Ahmad Khan (College of Engineering – Computer Engineering)

  • Book Selection: The Da Vinci Code by Dan Brown

“Working at the AUS Library has truly been a life changing experience for me. The task of helping patrons with all kinds of questions taught me several important social skills and helped me make new friends among students and the library staff as well. I also worked alongside the IT team on projects that helped me obtain new technological skills related to my major as a computer engineer. I always recommend others to join the library so they can have the same amazing experience as me while working there. I consider myself very lucky to be a part of the AUS Library team!”

“Working at the library helped me learn discipline. Practicing tasks repeatedly made me develop the habit of detailed thinking that would be important in any workplace after graduation. For example, I was able to improve my communication with library patrons by giving thorough answers to their problems and predicting possible issues they might encounter. Most importantly, since a strong team of supervisors doubled checked my work I had to learn to be more detailed and precise. In addition, the staff I worked under and the students I worked alongside of always made the return to my shifts at the library worthwhile.”

“There were many things I learned while I worked at the library, but the most important thing was how to work with and help others to the best of my ability. As a student assistant, my job was to help patrons with all of their issues and I had to do that with the help of the otter assistants. Therefore, teamwork was very important during my work at the library.”

We thank all our graduating student assistants for their service and wish them all every success in their future graduate and working careers. To all our current student assistants – best wishes for finals!
